THE TRUTH ABOUT THE IMPACT OF AI ON OUR CIVILISATION MIGHT NOT BE AS EXTREME AS PREDICTED
Many will be surprised by the above statement coming from me: an Evangelist of AI over the past two decades and one of the fathers of Augmented Intelligence.
Let me clarify!
CURRENT OPINIONS ARE EXTREME
Current opinions are extreme. Some try to frighten people by turning AI into the absolute evil invention that intends to kill people’s jobs and dehumanize our society. On the other side utopists see AI as some kind of universal solution to all the problems of humanity.
Teared between these two forces lies the risk that we may all get in a weak middle way made of compromises, half-ways and renouncements. These are the most dangerous ones. Instead, I recommend a different approach where AI is submitted to the humans and facilitate their collaboration. This way is what I’ve called Augmented Intelligence. It pulls humanity up by bringing back man as the core of organizations and reduces for them the complexity of the world we are living in today.
Let me develop this recommendation for the specific application to Business intelligence. Augmented Intelligence opens the new era of Prescriptive Analytics that makes a recommendation leading to THE best possible decision. Not just a good decision, or an optimized decision but simply THE best possible decision[MOU1]. A decision that the business user could probably not find with existing tools, except by pure chance.
THE WAR OF DECISION MAKERS
Now, let’s imagine an organization where the war of decision makers would be declared. An organization where you are a winner or an underdog depending on your capability to access data or use complex applications, where your experience, your intuition, your people skills, or the “unwritten knowledge” you acquired through time to become relevant. Is this the kind of organization we want? Would it be a good place to work? Would such an enterprise be attractive for talents? Would it perform better? We all know the answer. It’s NO to all of them.
This is why I am convinced that the very first quality of an Artificial Intelligence engine is, before and above all, to be practical and user-friendly, so that anybody in the organization would be able to access
its benefit leaving no one behind, especially the ones who hinder experience. Today, this is vital for all human organizations as agility requires that decisions are made at the closest level to where the problems arise. Decisions must be brought back to where they are useful, from workers in digital factories to top level executives. The closest to the problem a decision is made, the best.
Once this is done, the graphical user interface should be a simple way to capture human intelligence and feed the questions with the “unwritten knowledge”, intuition and experience. This is why MondoBrain offers a natural and intuitive data-visualization interface where the users can refine the questions they ask to Artificial Intelligence, subjecting its power to the user and allowing to confront reality to intuitions in a seamless way. Not the other way round. [MOU2]
THERE ARE NO RIGHT ANSWERS TO BAD QUESTIONS
AI can help answer questions. There are no right answers to bad questions. This is why MondoBrain puts great attention to supporting the end user in the questions they ask. Once this is done, AI can come into play with just a simple click. Instantly, billions of combinations are tested and evaluated, with a precision that would require years or even centuries with traditional methods. What is delivered to the end-user is not just a better understanding of his data or the projection of answers to some “what if’s?”. It is a true recommendation that could immediately translate into operational actions or be shared with the user’s community through the collective intelligence feature of MondoBrain. By being shared, these discoveries might generate multiple in-depth exchanges that would finally lead to a decision that is supported by the entire group of people who had an insight to bring into the process.
ENTERPRISE AUGMENTED INTELLIGENCE
As all stakeholders have brought their contribution to a clear decision, documented by a auditable process, the entire team that crafted it is likely to support its implementation. As the decision is processed, the implementation becomes seamless because all ins and outs are objectivized. This is Enterprise Augmented Intelligence.
Just like Stephen Hawking said: “Artificial Intelligence could be the ‘worst or best event’ in civilization”. EAI brings the best of it.
It’s our pick!
